Powder booth extraction and cartridge calculator

Enter the tallest and longest part and the hanger. The tool gives the booth opening a manual booth needs, or the slot openings of an automatic booth, the extraction air at your face velocity, the number of filter cartridges at the air-to-cloth ratio, and the fan power at the booth's static pressure.

Method

Opening height equals the tallest part plus the hanger plus 200 mm of clearance. For a manual booth the opening width gives the operator reach at both ends of the part. For an automatic booth the part passes through an entry and an exit slot, and the gun openings add to the open area.

Extraction equals open area times face velocity times 3,600. Face velocity is the speed of the air entering every opening; it keeps overspray inside. EN 16985 asks for containment and a monitored airflow and does not fix a number; 0.4 to 0.6 m/s is the practice for powder booths and 0.5 m/s is our design value.

Cartridge count equals extraction divided by the air a cartridge filters at the chosen air-to-cloth ratio. Fan power equals air volume per second times static pressure divided by the fan efficiency.

Assumptions and defaults

  • Extraction per cartridge defaults to 1,000 m³/h for a Ø100 x 1,900 mm cartridge, the value behind our twelve-cartridge standard booth.
  • Static pressure defaults to 800 Pa and fan efficiency to 65 percent, which together reproduce the 4 kW fan of our standard booth.
  • The standard manual booth used for the check: 3,000 x 2,200 x 1,400 mm, 12,000 m³/h, 4 kW fan, twelve cartridges.

What the result does not tell you

The tool sizes the opening and the air. Booth depth, the floor grating, powder recovery (cyclone or cartridge), explosion relief, earthing and the ATEX zoning of the interior are set on the proposal for your powder and your colour changes.

Questions this tool answers

Short answers; the tool gives the numbers for your case.

How big should a powder coating booth be?

Opening height is the tallest part plus the hanger plus about 200 mm. Width gives reach at both ends of the longest part for a manual booth, or lets the part pass through the slots of an automatic booth. The booth is built to the part; the standard 3,000 x 2,200 mm opening covers most job-shop parts.

What is the minimum airflow for a powder coating booth?

Enough that air enters every opening at a velocity that keeps overspray inside, in practice 0.4 to 0.6 m/s. Multiply the open area in square metres by the velocity and by 3,600 for cubic metres per hour. A 3.0 x 2.2 m opening at 0.5 m/s needs about 12,000 m³/h.

How many cartridges does a powder booth need?

Divide the extraction by the air one cartridge filters at the design air-to-cloth ratio. At about 1,000 m³/h per cartridge a 12,000 m³/h booth needs twelve. More cartridges lower the pressure drop and extend the cleaning interval.
